For example, if a vector currently had space allocated for 100 elements, and the 101st element was inserted, it would allocate a new block with space for 150 elements.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11926392516439687552noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9446784.post-1425458724533550242016-04-12T13:38:25.735-07:002016-04-12T13:38:25.735-07:00I'm a bit of a C++ novice, but is g++ smart en...I'm a bit of a C++ novice, but is g++ smart enough to figure out that it's going to insert count objects and therefore it should start by allocating a vector of that size? That would explain quite a bit of the behavior, including linked lists being faster when compiled without optimization.Defenestratorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04131774846520702665noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9446784.post-35361533621565498122016-04-08T23:44:12.803-07:002016-04-08T23:44:12.803-07:00I hacked my hack https://waltsgeekblog.quora.com/V...I hacked my hack https://waltsgeekblog.quora.com/Vector-vs-linked-list-test-code-Part-2 . I changed the key type of the various containers from the primitive type 'int' to my not-of-any-pratical-use class 'Int', which has its member functions in a separate compilation unit. With this code, linked lists handily beat vectors (with optimization enabled). But there is a new mystery -- std::list and std::vector now beat the counterparts I hand-rolled that don't use heap allocation.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11926392516439687552noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9446784.post-41429227923647347382016-04-07T07:09:58.008-07:002016-04-07T07:09:58.008-07:00Sometimes I do my own memory allocation, similar t...Sometimes I do my own memory allocation, similar to what Walt showed. Back in the day, using Delphi on Windows to run a server, this was essential.

At first it looked like the server code had a memory leak. On closer inspection the problem was actually memory fragmentation. For some classes I replaced Delphi's standard memory allocation with my own. That trick saved us a lot of memory and made the code go a lot faster.

(Actually, at one time there was a real memory leak, too. The memory leak and the memory fragmentation reinforced each other. Having both of these issues at once made things worse than the two separate problems added together. I did a lot of measuring back then.)

With g++ and Linux I don't see such a clear improvement. The modern g++ memory manager is smarter about threads than Delphi was. g++ does a good job, but it's hard to measure. Mostly the g++ memory manager can avoid waiting on mutexes, but not always. The details are completely chaotic in all but the simplest multi-threaded programs.

I'll agree with what Walt Karas said about heap allocation. It often can be expensive. But that's not explaining the factor of 90 to 100x speedup that we're seeing here.Philip Smolenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06159443204723765728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9446784.post-37010555847599190372016-04-07T04:13:27.368-07:002016-04-07T04:13:27.368-07:00It would be interesting to see what the results of...It would be interesting to see what the results of this test would be with virtual memory disabled.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11926392516439687552noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9446784.post-89173557123625400292016-04-05T20:19:12.931-07:002016-04-05T20:19:12.931-07:00I hacked on your code some ( https://waltsgeekblog...I hacked on your code some ( https://waltsgeekblog.quora.com/Vector-vs-linked-list-test-code ). I tried to eliminate the factor of heap allocation, but it was less of a factor than I expected. I saw more like a 3x advantage for vectors. However, linked lists are faster when you compile with no optimization, so perhaps it's possible the optimization is removing code it shouldn't in order for the test to be valid.

(Fortunately, if you follow the link and cut-n-paste the code, the line numbers seem to magically disappear, at least when you paste it into vi on linux.)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11926392516439687552noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9446784.post-76232098075143311472016-04-04T10:53:37.918-07:002016-04-04T10:53:37.918-07:00The "a pair of vectors" is an interestin...The "a pair of vectors" is an interesting idea. There is so...I hadn't looked at std::chrono.

There is some good stuff in C++11. It took some warming up to, but I now use lambda expressions and the "auto" keyword a lot. Of course, sometimes you get the new move constructors for free.

But a lot of C++11 seems to be the standard catching up to my own C++ libraries. Things like threads, this high performance timer, and a keyword to quickly remove the default constructor or assignment operator.

There are so many new features in C++11, and more after that. I read the documentation. I tried to pick out the useful stuff. That's no easy task. And when I already have a solution I like, there's little point in changing and retesting working code.Philip Smolenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06159443204723765728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9446784.post-64018135164338541632016-04-04T10:40:09.479-07:002016-04-04T10:40:09.479-07:00std::deque is simple enough.
